I've been following very closely on the news of the worst and major earthquake in Haiti on CNN, BBC and Aljazeera live for the pass few days. At the same time fulfilling my commitment with EC drops on bloggers who visited me. I've not been sleeping right and awake at odd hours. Imagine, I was having the impression that today is already Monday, only to realize that it is Sunday instead upon confirmation.
I heard that this is the worst earthquake in history. The destruction are so massive that the toll and extent of damage in the city of 1.9 million were difficult to determine, but the United Nations and aid agencies said thousands were likely killed. Many survivors were believed to still be stuck in rubble.
Up to 3 million people might be affected by the earthquake and could require humanitarian assistance, the Red Cross estimated. It is impossible to say how many deaths there have been, but the damage is tremendous.
Since the quake occurred under land rather than water, structures and people on the surface were directly exposed to the tremors, particularly since the fault was quite shallow.
The quake occurred in the vicinity of the northern boundary where the Caribbean tectonic plate shifts eastwards by about 20 mm per year relative to the North American plate. The strike-slip fault system in the region has two branches in Haiti, the Septentrional fault in the north and the Enriquillo-Plaintain Garden fault in the south; seismic data suggests that the January 2010 quake was on the Enriquillo-Plaintain Garden fault, which had been locked solid for 250 years, gathering stress. The stress would ultimately have been relieved either by a large earthquake or a series of smaller ones. The rupture of this Mw 7.0 earthquake was roughly 65 km long with mean slip of 1.8 m. Preliminary analysis of the slip distribution found amplitudes of up to approximately 4 meters using ground motion records from all over the world.
The United States Geological Survey recorded six aftershocks in the two hours after the main earthquake of magnitudes approximately 5.9. Within the first nine hours 26 aftershocks of magnitude 4.2 or greater were recorded, with twelve of them magnitude 5.0 or greater. According to a member of the USGS, based on the strength and location of the quake, about three million people would have been affected.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning after the quake, but cancelled it shortly afterwards.
Tyler Perry says he has been watching the crisis in Haiti, as we all have. He wanted to do something but also saw warnings that "some people are already starting to set up charity scams. I just don't understand how people can be so cruel," he writes in his latest newsletter.
His solution: Give to his fund and he'll make sure the money gets there.
"I plan to make a few, but my first donation will be $250,000.00. You can add whatever you like to this and I know any amount of money that you would like to give would be appreciated greatly by the people of Haiti. No amount is too small. I assure you that every dime you give to the Tyler Perry Foundation for this effort will get to the people of Haiti."
Madonna says she has also given $250K to Red Cross relief efforts. The pop queen said today in a statement that her prayers are with the people of Haiti. She says she donated to Partners In Health, a longtime health care provider there. She is asking friends and fans around the world "to join me collectively to match my contribution or give in any way you can".
The first two commenters will get my Linky Love Thanks for all your comments

Below is a very interesting video relating to the quake
We should be very grateful that this does not happened in our part of the world. This massive disaster wipe out the city completely with the infrastructure destroyed and now it is in a stage of turmoil. We should all realize by now that the future is so unpredictable especially with climate changes, global warming and damages of the ozone layers. It is actually the human who are responsible for all these damages, don't blame the creator, bear this in mind! All goods are from God and most destruction are created by human themselves, if you care to think for a moment. Latest death could top up to 100,000 and many dead bodies are even found rotting which is indeed a dreadful and frightening scene!

The Haiti earthquake is just horrible. And that is very generous of you to give all that money. And I just heard something this morning, that some of us should wait about 3 months to donate, because there will be an even bigger need for help, to help rebuild the city.
